1 Nephi 16-22: Facing Life’s Challenges

If you’ve ever wondered why bad things happen to good people, you may find insights in these chapters of the Book of Mormon. The scriptures teach us that trials come when we keep the commandments, but the Lord will prepare the way before us. Nephi and his family faced multiple challenges, and through them all, Nephi was strengthened as he trusted in the Lord.

Challenges

The Broken Bow (1 Nephi 16:17-32): Nephi accidentally broke his family’s steel bow, essential for their survival. Despite their hunger and his brothers’ anger, Nephi proactively crafted a new bow and sought his father’s guidance to find food. This story encourages us to proactively solve problems and seek divine or leadership guidance when accidents occur.

Ishmael Dies (1 Nephi 16:34-39): Ishmael’s death led to his family’s grief turning into blame and anger towards Lehi and Nephi. Nephi’s patience and the Lord’s intervention helped diffuse the situation. This teaches us to seek solace in the Lord during grief, rather than resorting to blame or anger.

Nephi Builds a Ship (1 Nephi 17:7-16): Commanded by the Lord to build a ship, Nephi immediately sought the means to accomplish this daunting task. His unquestioning obedience and proactive attitude serve as an example when facing seemingly impossible tasks.

Brothers Refuse to Help (1 Nephi 17:48-77; 18:1-4): Despite mockery and lack of support from his brothers, Nephi persevered in building the ship. His example shows the importance of persistence and leadership in the face of adversity.

Mutiny at Sea (1 Nephi 18:9-22): Facing rebellion and personal restraint on the ship, Nephi maintained faith and eventually guided the ship to safety. This exemplifies maintaining faith in tumultuous times.

The Liahona – Small and Simple Means

The Liahona, a compass given to Lehi’s family, worked by faith, diligence, and attention to its directions. This symbolizes how small acts of faith can provide guidance in our lives.

Isaiah’s Words and Nephi’s Commentary

Nephi draws parallels between his experiences and Isaiah’s prophecies, concluding with a message of hope for the righteous. This teaches us that, despite challenges, the righteous need not fear and will find solace and guidance through their faith.

Closing Thoughts

We are reminded that through challenges, if we remain faithful and righteous, we need not fear. Our hope lies in Jesus Christ, who can heal and restore.

Dear sisters, we love you, we think you’re wonderful, and we hope to see you next time.
